President Michael D Higgins spent €367,338 during his Presidential Election campaign it has been revealed.
According to figures published by the Standards In Public Office Commission, President Higgins spent the most of any candidate in as he secured his place in Áras na Uachtarán earlier this year.
The figures also revealed that the president was entitled to €200,000 reimbursement after winning the election.
Although President Higgins spent more than his opponents during the campaign, he was not the only candidate entitled to a reimbursement as independent candidate was entitled to a reimbursement after spending €119,911 during the campaign.
Under the legislation candidates who win or exceeded one quarter of their funding qutoa are entitled to a refund.
Meanwhile other candidates to contest the election including Independent candidate Joan Freeman spent a total of €253,194, whilst Independent Seán Gallagher spent €246,820.
Figures also showed that Sinn Féin’s Liadh Ní Riada spent €209,716, whilst, Independent Gavin Duffy spent €163,438 during their campaigns.
