President Higgins says Gaza is a ‘scandalous travesty’ and calls on every country in the world to do something immediately to help

President Michael D. Higgins has delivered a scathing assessment of the circumstances in Gaza, calling it shameful that supplies of medical equipment and humanitarian relief are being prevented from reaching the coastal region, reports RTE.

“Must take responsibility for the deaths that are ensuing” were his additional words, directed at the countries who let the blockade to persist.

The President also urged nations to enhance funding for the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA) and denounced a “propaganda campaign” against the organisation, reports RTE.

In response to Israel’s accusations that some UNRWA employees participated in the Hamas attack on October 7, a number of nations, notably the US and the UK, have stopped financing the aid organisation operating in Gaza.

In a statement this afternoon, President Higgins said: “The releasing of a propaganda campaign against the United Nations is a scandalous travesty against the little less than heroic efforts of all those involved on the frontline in Gaza – medical staff, those working to supply nutrition and aid in the most trying of circumstances, and those other dedicated professionals in UNRWA who have lost more than 160 of their colleagues,” reports RTE.
