President Michael D Higgins has been officially inaugurated into office for a second term in office during an event at Dublin Castle this evening.
President Higgins who was confirmed as Ireland’s next President just over two weeks, proclaimed the declaration that will see him serve another seven years in office.
Speaking before crowd which included the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Tánaiste Simon Coveney president said the following: “I, Michael D Higgins, do solemnly promise and declare I will maintain the constitution of Ireland.
“I will dedicate my abilities to the service of the people of Ireland.”
Amongst those to attend the ceremony included former President’s Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese as well as the five other candidates who contested the Presidential Election.
