
Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, said that Ukraine was attempting to launch a nocturnal attack on Russia’s Kursk nuclear power plant and that Russia had notified the UN nuclear safety inspector of the issue, reports RTE.
Sergei Smirnov, the acting governor of Kursk, informed Mr. Putin that the four Soviet graphite-moderated RBMK-1000 reactors at the site were operating in a “stable” environment.
Speaking on the situation in Russian border areas, Mr. Putin addressed a gathering of top officials, “The enemy tried to strike at the nuclear power plant during the night today,” reports RTE.
“The International Atomic Energy Agency has been informed, they promise to come themselves and send specialists to assess the situation,” Putin stated, reports RTE.
He didn’t elaborate on the incident or offer any supporting documentation for his claims.

Ukraine did not immediately respond, and Reuters was unable to get independent confirmation of the strike.
Thousands of Ukrainian forces broke across Russia’s western border on August 6, making their rapid invasion of Kursk the largest foreign force incursion into Russia since World War II. It appeared to take Russia by surprise, reports RTE.
Since then, there has been fierce combat around 30 km away from the nuclear facility as Russian troops seek to drive out Ukrainian soldiers who are trying to expand and solidify their grip over the region.
On August 9, Rafael Grossi, the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) director general, made a plea for the utmost caution in order to prevent a nuclear disaster, reports RTE.
A Russian official stated that earlier, Russian soldiers stopped a Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance team from breaching the border in the western Bryansk area, which is around 240 kilometres away from the location of Ukraine’s invasion into the nearby Kursk region.
Although a senior commander issued a warning that Ukrainian forces were reorganising for a potential attack, Russia declared yesterday that its forces had advanced in eastern Ukraine and had started to drive back Ukrainian soldiers in the Kursk area, reports RTE.
A Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance squad launched an attempt yesterday, but Russian armed forces and border guards from the Federal Security Service stopped it, according to Bryansk Governor Alexander Bogomaz.
According to him, the attempted intrusion happened in the Klimovo area, which is next to the Chernihiv region of Ukraine, reports RTE.
