The US Department of Justice has dropped a criminal investigation into General Michael Flynn, a staunch ally of President Trump and his former National Security adviser after memos were released showing his FBI interview was a set up to incriminate him.
Flynn, a retired 3-star army Lieutenant General, was standing trial after being accused of lying to the FBI about contacts with the Russian ambassador to the United States Sergey Kislyak.
The presiding judge dismissed the case concluding “untethered to, and unjustified by, the FBI’s counterintelligence investigation into Mr. Flynn” and that the interview was “conducted without any legitimate investigative basis.”
President Trump elated at the decision, called those who prosecuted General Flynn “human scum” and said a “big price” should be paid for what has been done to the war hero.
In the exculpatory memo one of the FBI agents tasked with interviewing General Flynn asks “Are we trying to find the truth, or catch him in a lie”.
President Trump has demanded that prosecutions follow the exoneration of General Flynn and said that the Obama administration was behind this attempt to sow “chaos” in his White House saying the former President was guilty of “treason”.
