President Trump expresses cautious optimism and says there’s still one or two ‘thorny issues’ in Ukraine peace talks

President Donald Trump expressed cautious optimism after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Mar-a-Lago on Sunday, stating that a peace deal to end Russia’s nearly four-year war in Ukraine is closer than ever. Following productive discussions, Trump told reporters, “There are one or two very thorny issues, very tough issues,” primarily revolving around territorial disputes, especially control over the Donbas region and other occupied lands.

Both leaders highlighted significant progress on a 20-point peace framework, with Zelenskyy claiming 90% agreement and security guarantees nearly finalized. Trump estimated security aspects at 95% complete but emphasized the land question as the most difficult unresolved point. He noted prior talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and involvement from European leaders, suggesting teams will reconvene soon.

Despite ongoing Russian attacks, Trump insisted all parties want peace, warning that unexpected obstacles could still derail efforts. Negotiations continue amid hopes for a breakthrough in early 2026.
