The US President, Donald Trump, has said that while soldiers love him the top brass at the Pentagon don’t like him as he wants to end America’s seemingly endless foreign wars while they wish to continue to wage them to keep defence contractors “happy”.
During his first campaign for President, Mr Trump railed against foreign wars and interventions, particularly the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and promised to begin bringing US troops home.
In recent months President Trump has redoubled his efforts to draw down US involvement in overseas conflicts announcing half of all American troops in Iraq would be home by Christmas and push a ceasefire with the Taliban in Afghanistan.
President Trump made the comments while he dismissed “anonymous sources” who claimed he disparaged America’s war dead at a commemoration in France in 2018.
President Trump said:
“I’m not saying the military’s in love with me. The soldiers are.”
“The top people in the Pentagon probably aren’t because they want to do nothing but fight wars so all of those wonderful companies that make the bombs and make the planes and make everything else stay happy.”
