Hong Kong police have sparked global outrage over footage of officers violently arresting a 12 year old girl amidst pro-democracy protests.
According to the Guardian, the girl was shopping for art supplies when she found herself in the midst of a protest. Running away out of fear, she was filmed being tackled by an officer before several more rushed over to pin her down.
The girl’s mother said she intends to make a formal complaint, while HK police deny using excessive force and claim the girl ran away from them suspiciously.
On Sunday 300 people were arrested in the city for joining ‘unlawful assemblies’ to mark the day Hong Kong’s elections were due. They were delayed until next year due to Covid-19 concerns, with some critics claiming the pandemic is being used as an excuse to further erode democracy in Hong Kong. Watch the footage below:
