Pressure mounts for Spain for Luis Rubiales to resign after he kissed female footballer on the lips

The regional heads of Spanish football are another group calling for the resignation of Luis Rubiales as president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), reports RTE.

RFEF head, Rubiales was sacked by FIFA on Saturday after grabbing and kissing player Jenny Hermoso after her World Cup victory in Australia on August 20.

And now the presidents of the regions have asked Rubiales to “”immediately present his resignation as president of the RFEF”.

“After recent events and the unacceptable behaviour that has seriously damaged the image of Spanish football, the presidents request that Luis Rubiales resign immediately as president of the RFEF,” said the federation (RFEF) in a statement following a meeting between the regional presidents, reports RTE.

The presidents expressed their support for interim boss Pedro Rocha, who called a meeting to lead the organization towards “dialogue and reconciliation with all football institutions”, reports RTE.

The RFEF statement also called for a change in the leadership of the federation.

“We will urge the relevant authorities to carry out a profound and imminent organisational restructuring in strategic positions of the federation in order to make way for a new stage in the management of Spanish football,” it read, reports RTE.

The presidents of the regions also congratulated the women’s team on winning the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Until the management of the federation changes, 81 players are currently on strike, including Hermoso.

On Monday, prosecutors at Spain’s highest criminal court said they had launched a preliminary investigation into Rubiales’ kiss as it could constitute a crime of “sexual assault”.

“Prosecutors from the National Court have opened a preliminary investigation to look into the facts, which could constitute an offence of sexual assault,” a court statement said, reports RTE.
