It has been announced that every primary school in the country will receive a national flag over the coming year to mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising.

It is understood that over 3,000 primary schools across the country will receive a flag from members of the Defence Forces. The news comes after St Patrick’s National School in Islandeady, Co Mayo, was selected as the first school to be presented with the national flag.

It is believed that the Defence Forces will hold a ceremony in which they will raise the tricolour and read the Proclamation to pupils and teachers. it is also understood that pupils will be given background information on the symbolism of the Tricolour and the etiquette attached to its display and storage.
