Prison officers raise serious concerns about what they claim to be ‘dangerous levels’ of overcrowding across Irish jail facilities

A number of prison officers have raised deep concerns about their perceived levels of overcrowding across a number of penitentiary facilities in the country.

Officers say that ‘dangerous’ levels of overcrowding are quite the norm at the moment, and have been so for some time.

Officers say that overcrowded prisons become the perfect environment for contraband activities and the intimidation of ‘vulnerable’ prisoners.

They go on to say that it has become a ‘massive’ issue that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.
