Pro Life Campaign claims Irish abortion rate will have almost trebled in one year

‘START’ an organisation representing around 250 doctors in Ireland who carry out or facilitate abortions has claimed that around 800-900 abortions a month are being carried out in Ireland since the legalisation of abortion on demand on January 1st this year.

Based on statistics of women purchasing abortion pills online and travelling to England for terminations before the repeal of the eight amendment it is estimated that three as many Irish babies are being aborted per-month compared to the same time pre-repeal.

Pro Life Campaign spokesperson Maeve O’Hanlon has described these statistics as “a devastating tragedy” however, START are using them to demand more changes to facilitate greater access to abortion.

In a statement O’Hanlon said

“It is stunning how the goal posts keep shifting without any scrutiny or hard questions being asked. The public were misled every step of the way during the referendum campaign when they were told abortion would be restrictive in the event of the Eighth Amendment being repealed. But now the sad truth is starting to emerge. Pro-life campaigners were accused of scaremongering but based on the latest estimates, if anything, they underestimated what would happen.”
