Put a ring on it: Irish people are now waiting longer than ever to get married

We’re living in the age of social media where people like, love, comment and share… but it appears they’re waiting longer that ever to do all that with a significant other.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) have new figures that show Irish people are waiting longer to get married than ever before.

The average groom is a few months past 36 years of age, with brides around two years younger at 34.

In 2018, Monaghan had the lowest average age for both grooms and brides at 34.5 and 32.5 years. However, Wicklow had the highest with the average being 38.3 years for grooms and 36.3 years for brides.

There were a total of 20,389 opposite-sex marriages in 2018 and just 664 same-sex marriages.

In the past 50 years the average age of grooms decreased from 28.4 in 1968 to 26.2 in 1978, before rising to 36.4 in 2018.

A similar trend is evident for brides, with the average age falling from 25.5 in 1968 to a record low of 24 in 1978, and increasing to almost 35 years of age in 2018.
