Australian airline Qantas has announced that it will launch the world’s first commercial non-stop flights from Sydney to London and New York by the end of 2025, finally breaking the tyranny of distance.
The Australian airliner has announced the move after ordering a dozen special Airbus planes and is set to demand higher fares in a multimillion-dollar bet that travellers will pay a premium to save four hours on the popular route.
Departing in late 2025, the flights will use specially configured A350-1000 aircraft with additional premium seating and reduced overall capacity to carry up to 238 passengers on a 20-hour journey, the longest non-stop commercial flight in the world.
Announcing plans for the service, the loss-making airline said a strong domestic market recovery and signs of improving international flights after the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic gave it the confidence to make a big investment in its future. Qantas expects a return to profitability for the fiscal year beginning in July.
