Rally competitor killed and another injured in two-car crash at Clare Stages Rally

According to Motorsport Ireland, one competitor has died as a result of a collision during the Clare Stage Rally, reports RTE.

The 30-year-old man was a passenger in a car which collided with another car in the Glencolumbkille area of Carron at around 1.30 pm.

Another person, the driver of the second vehicle, was taken to University Hospital Limerick to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Two other men, the driver and passenger in each vehicle, were unhurt, reports RTE.

The accident occurred during the fourth stage of the rally and the first on-scene team arrived at the scene before more emergency services arrived.

A Garda spokesman said the man was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has now been taken to University Hospital Limerick for a post-mortem examination, reports RTE.

The road will be closed this evening and local diversions are in place.

A spokesman for Motorsport Ireland offered condolences to the families of the victims and members of the Clare Motor Club, which organized the event.

Gardai have appealed for any witnesses to contact Ennis Garda Station on 065 684 8100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station, reports RTE.
