The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) rarely agrees with complainants about RTE but they have come under massive public pressure from over 4000 viewers regarding the despicable caricature of portraying God to be a rapist.
According to RTE, the broadcast was reviewed by the RTÉ Editorial Standards Board and “was found not to comply with specific statutory and regulatory provisions”.
The broadcast failed under Principle 5 – Respect for Persons and Groups in Society – was cited among the complaints upheld.
The BAI committee concluded that the “treatment of a religious figure did not show due respect for religious views and beliefs and did not constitute critical scrutiny of religion”.
The Waterford Whispers production featured Aengus Mac Grianna, the former RTÉ newsreader, delivering a fake news bulletin stating that God had been arrested on charges of sexual assault.
