Calls to the HSE’s Drugs and Alcohol Helpline are at an all-time high, with a significant and steady rise in calls pertaining to cocaine and alcohol, reports The Mirror.
The helpline, which also offers information on HIV and sexual health, received about 6,000 calls in 2023, according to its most recent annual report.
A total of 5,983 contacts were recorded, representing an 18% yearly growth and the greatest amount since the service’s inception 28 years ago, reports The Mirror.
On the other hand, the number of calls to the hotline about cocaine and alcohol rose even more quickly.
Additionally, a record number of calls for benzodiazepines and cannabis were received.
Aileen Dooley, helpline manager, said: “It may be challenging to offer the full range of options in a short GP consultation visit. People often will need a longer conversations,” reports The Mirror.
