Red Light: Holland is considering banning prostitution

The Netherlands are considering banning prostitution, which would bring an end to Amsterdam’s iconic Red Light District, RT reports.

The Christian Democratic Union (CDA), a junior coalition partner in the Dutch government, are behind the proposal to make soliciting sex for money a criminal offence. They have amassed 50,000 signatures from the public in support of their proposal, and it is to be debated in Dutch parliament later this week.

One politician from the CDA said that that the prostitution industry is unfair to its female workers, many of whom are from poor Eastern European countries. Other groups, including their coalition partners, assert that making prostitution illegal would simply drive the industry underground and more dangerous for workers and clients.
