There was some good news for tenants living in heavily populated cities last night as the Dáil officially passed all stages of the new legislation that will see a cap put on all rent increases.
The measure which is being introduced into “pressure zones” such as Dublin and Cork will see landlords’ being prohibited from increasing rent prices by more than 4% per year.
The highly contested legislation was finally passed by 52 votes to 43, whilst there was 25 abstentions.
The new legislation is expected to go before the Seanad next Wednesday – where it will meet another obstacle as Fianna Fáil Senators are expected to abstain from passing the Bill which in turn could put the legislation’s introduction in jeopardy.
