Reprehensible: Ireland now has 15,378 Irish people living in emergency accommodation as thousands of migrants continue to come in

A record 15,378 people were living in emergency accommodation last month, according to the latest figures from the Department of Housing, reports Breaking News.

The data, published on Friday, reveals that 4,653 of those in emergency accommodation in February were children.

This marks an increase of 92 people compared to January, with the number of homeless children also rising from 4,603 the previous month, reports Breaking News.

A total of 2,185 families were recorded as homeless, with more than half being single-parent households.

The data also indicates that adults aged between 25 and 44 make up the largest proportion of those experiencing homelessness, reports Breaking News.

However, the actual number of homeless individuals is believed to be significantly higher, as the monthly figures do not account for those sleeping rough, couch-surfing, or staying in domestic violence refuges.

Focus Ireland chief executive Pat Dennigan said: “As the clocks move forward tomorrow, bringing longer and brighter evenings, it should be a time when all children look forward to playing outside. Instead, 4,653 children are stuck living in emergency accommodation, with no place to call home. This situation would have been considered utterly unacceptable just 10 years ago, and we must remember that is something that can be solved,” reports Breaking News.

“One key measure would be for new Minister for Housing James Browne to implement the Programme for Government commitment that more of the new supply of social housing is used to provide homes for long-term homeless families. This same approach drove the sharp fall in homelessness during the pandemic five years ago and we should learn from this approach. We believe that it is possible to reduce and then end homelessness if the right actions are taken,” reports Breaking News.

The residential market study from estate brokers DNG anticipates that prices will continue to grow due of the paucity of new properties to purchase by private purchasers.

According to the review, during the first three months of the year, the average price of a resale property in the city rose by 1.9%, reports Breaking News.

Similar to the Central Statistics Office’s study, DNG stated that it estimates that 32,500 new homes were constructed overall last year.

Darragh O’Brien, the former housing minister and minister of transport, stated that the government aimed for “moderate” home prices, reports Breaking News.
