The Republican run U.S State of Florida is moving forward with legislation that would allow people who sexually assault children under 12-years-old to be put to death.

The Florida State Senate is likely to pass the bill allowing paedophiles to be executed as is the State House of Representatives, both of which have large Republican majorities.

The legislation will rebuke decades of U.S. Supreme Court and Florida Supreme Court rulings that have prohibited the execution of defendants in rape and sexual abuse cases but the bills argue that a 1981 Florida Supreme Court case and a 2008 U.S. Supreme Court case were “wrongly decided,” with the Florida Senate version declaring said cases represent an “egregious infringement of the states’ power to punish the most heinous of crimes.”

Jonathan Martin, a former prosecutor turned Republican state senator is sponsoring the bill and has said after Rules Committee approved it:

“If an individual rapes an 11-year-old, a 10-year-old, a 2-year-old or a 5-year-old, they should be subject to the death penalty,”

It is expected the Democrats, especially more ardent liberals and “progressives” will ferociously oppose the legislation allowing child abusers to be put to death and will likely challenge it in the U.S Supreme Court.

Republican Govenor of Florida Ron DeSantis is expected to sign the bill into law without hesitation after expressing support for the legislation.
