Research claims eating one piece of processed meat the size of a rasher each day could increase dementia risk by 44% but eating unprocessed red meat could fight against the disease

Separate to the campaign by global warming activists to reduce meat eating to save the planet, researchers at the Nutritional Epidemiology Group of the University of Leeds have been compiling data from nearly 500,000 people to assess how eating meat impacts on personal health.

The researchers have found that eating just one bacon rasher every day could increase a persons dementia risk by 44% reports RT. The scientific evidence was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition this week.

The report also said eating just 50g of unprocessed red meat like beef, veal and pork can actually help in fighting dementia with a decrease of 19% found in the large sample group.
The findings are based on nearly 500,000 people living in the UK with ages from 40 to 69.

“Our research adds to the growing body of evidence linking processed meat consumption to increased risk of a range of non-transmissible diseases,” said lead researcher Huifeng Zhang from the University of Leeds.
