Senator Sharon Keogan, the first independent woman councillor in Irish history to be elected to the Seanad, announced the beginning of the “Open the Churches Campaign” on Tuesday and the public as well as members the courageous members of the clergy are voicing their support.

Senator Keogan announced the campaign on social media, which is backed by a number of members of the Oireachtas, on Facebook account the Senator said:

“I called upon my colleagues to join me to ask our Taoiseach and Minister for Health to allow those of us with faith to be able to attend our church services during Holy week & Easter.
Ireland is the only remaining country in the European Union where churches are expected to remain closed to public worship at this time.
There is no evidence that small, socially distanced gatherings in churches are ‘spreader events’.”

In the same week Fr PJ Hughes, the parish priest for Mullahoran and Loughduff, said he will continue to say Mass for his parishioners and has refused to pay a €500 fine he was issued with.
