Richard Bruton calls for TV licence fee to be scrapped and replaced with Public Service Media Charge

The former Minister for Communions Richard Bruton has called for the current TV licence fee to be scrapped.

Speaking to Newstalk, Bruton has called for the fee to be replaced with a public service media charge that would be paid by everyone via their tax such as the Local Property Tax.

Bruton who is understood to have submitted proposals to thr Dail, told the station that the current system is outdated and is known to have evaders.

The former communications minister said that there is currently 15% who don’t pay their licence, whilst there is 10% of people who don’t own a television.

Bruton claims that the system must be updated to include all digital platforms which are more widely used.

He added that the revenue received from the new system wouldn’t be just given to mainstream media outlets such as RTE but other outlets as well.
