Road safety authorities renew their plea for drivers to put their mobile phones away, after it emerged that almost 5,000 motorists were caught using their mobile while driving in recent times

Road safety authorities have once again urged drivers to refrain from using their mobile phones while at the wheel, after it emerged that Gardai caught almost 5,000 motorists doing so in recent times.

Statistics show that using a mobile phone while driving increases the likelihood of an accident four-fold.

If caught, drivers face three penalty points and a €60 fine.

Gardai will be out en force over the Easter weekend policing the country’s roads.
