The Director General of RTÉ, Dee Forbes, has called for an immediate increase in public funding in order for the state broadcaster to continue producing more content to its views.

Speaking before the Joint Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment in the Dáil on Wednesday, Ms Forbes said the need for a public funding increase is urgent.

The RTÉ chief who has issued similar pleas in the past, also said she ageed with the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland’s recent report which recommended that the state broadcaster be given an extra €30m in public funding.

Ms Forbes told the committee that the need is greater than ever as the company is working with constant constraints that is hampering them from producing content that it needs to.

The Director General also said that national broadcaster is competing with other broadcasters that are spending millions if not billions on programming.

Ms Forbes comments comes after the government recently confirmed that it is to review the state broadcaster’s position when it comes to providing more public funding.

It is thought that state are keen to implement a new system that will eradicate TV licence fee evasion which is said to represent a 15% loss annually.
