RTE Director General Dee Forbes says TV licence fee offers good value for money and high paid presenters do a job not everyone can do

The Director General of RTÉ Dee Forbes has claimed that the licence fee offers good value for money and has defended the salaries of the broadcaster’s top earners.

Speaking before an Oireachtas Committee on Tuesday, Ms Forbes said that the current licence fee is value for money as the broadcaster produces quality content.

Ms Forbes who also called for a quicker transition from licence fee to media charge, also defended the salaries of the broadcaster’s top earners by saying they are doing a job not everyone can do.

The Director General who outlined plans to reduce costs at the broadcaster, told the committee that the transition from a licence to a media charge over the next seven years is not quick enough in terms of sustaining the future of public broadcasting.

Ms Forbes who also revealed that salaries will be reviewed, told the committee that the broadcaster is looking to reduce costs by €60m over the next three years with job cuts and other serious measures.
