RTÉ Director General Kevin Bakhurst said a document setting out RTÉ’s future plans should be ready to share with staff early next week, reports RTE.

In a message to staff, Bakhurst said the plan had been approved by RTÉ’s board.

“This strategic vision is the first step in engaging with our many stakeholders – Government, you, the media, the public, our audience, independent producers, regulators, service providers, and others – on the future of RTÉ,” Mr Bakhurst wrote, reports RTE.

“Your feedback, along with that from other stakeholders, will inform the development of RTÉ’s Statement of Strategy for 2024-2028, which is due in the new year,” he added, reports RTE.

RTÉ suffered a sharp decline in TV licence revenue following revelations in June that Ryan Tubridy had been underpaid.

Last month, Media Minister Catherine Martin warned that a fall in licence fee revenues could cost RTÉ €61 million this year and next.

In September, Bakhurst announced a hiring freeze and discretionary spending pause at the broadcaster.

Last week, Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, when asked about RTÉ’s strategic plan, said he wanted a national broadcaster that was much smaller than it currently is.

“If public service broadcasting is of real value, then it should continue,” he said, reports RTE.
