The “phasing” of RTÉ’s plan to eliminate hundreds of positions at the broadcaster is being re-examined, reports Breaking News.
Director-general Kevin Bakhurst of Station stated that while the company is still optimistic about cutting staff by up to 20% by 2028, a reassessment of the plan has been triggered by less State financing than expected.
“We’re having to look at how we phase in the strategy because the level of funding isn’t exactly what we asked for,” he said in an interview with the PA news agency.
“I’m sure we can implement the plan as a whole, but we need to consider how to phase it in,” reports Breaking News.
RTÉ is aiming to achieve a net reduction of about 400 positions by utilising a combination of voluntary departure schemes worth €50 million and “normal attrition and retirements.”
Asked what specific roles will be cut, Mr Bakhurst said: “In some areas, there will probably be fewer jobs than in other areas – but they will be across the organisation and at all levels. The thing is this will be over a five-year period and as the organisation changes, as some content is put outside in the independent sector, as we change what we’re doing for audiences – we need to do it strategically,” reports Breaking News.
