Social media erupted on Monday with rumours that US President Donald Trump will pardon WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Mr Assange spent seven years in Ecuador’s London embassy in order avoid arrest before he handed himself over to police earlier this year after which he was remanded to Belmarsh prison where his health is believed to have deteriorated.

Assange is awaiting extradition to the United States where he faces charges of espionage after his organisation published leaked classified files belonging to the US government.

Numerous pundits and millions of people have called on President Trump to pardon Mr Assange and on Monday Pastor Mark Burns tweeted “BREAKING: President Trump will pardon Julian Assange.”

The tweeted gardened thousands of retweets within hours and National Security Agency whistle-blower Edward Snowden retweeted the claim stating
“I very much hope this is true. The case against Assange is based on a legal theory that would criminalize the work of every journalist, both at home and abroad.”
