Rumours persists that hotel owners are being paid €1000s per room per month to house asylum seekers from Ukraine and other countries

The Liberal ran a series of articles about hotel price increases and a thriving hotel in Youghal, County Cork rumoured to be converted into an asylum centre.

We also called for transparency from the government around how much hotel owners are receiving for renting their hotel rooms to the government for asylum seekers.

It’s a reasonable request given Irish taxpayers are paying for these rooms. Various news articles in recent weeks have almost been portraying hoteliers as charitable organisations for “hosting” Ukrainian refugees.

Since publication of our articles, we have received some tip-offs from sources who claim to have some knowledge of the hotel rates for asylum seekers recently arriving in Ireland.

Our sources claim hotel owners are receiving €1000s per room per month with one source claiming up to €4000 per room per month. It is unknown if this is a per person rate per month or a per room rate. The rate includes three meals per day.

Another source claimed that Irish homeless families living in hotels are not entitled to food and are forced to eat expensive takeaways on a daily basis as there are no cooking facilities in their hotel rooms.

Irish taxpayers urgently need transparency form the Fianna Fail/Fine Gael coalition on how much these asylum seeker plans are costing and where the money is coming from.
