Russian political activity in Ireland ‘should come as no surprise to anyone’, says Harris

According to the Taoiseach, Russian involvement in Ireland should not come as a surprise, reports Breaking News.

Following a story claiming that Russian intelligence had reportedly recruited an Irish politician as an agent, Taoiseach Simon Harris made a statement.

According to The Sunday Times, Russian intelligence recruited the lawmaker as an agent during the Brexit negotiations using a “honeytrap,” with one of the objectives being to sabotage ties between the UK, Ireland, and the EU.

The article also stated that despite the fact that the Irish military and security agencies had discovered the possible agent, known by the code name Cobalt, they were still in the nation’s legislature, reports Breaking News.

When asked about the story that the Dublin media published on Sunday, Mr. Harris indicated he would not remark on security-related issues.

“Other than to say more broadly, it shouldn’t come as any surprise to any of us that Russia seeks to influence public opinion, seeks to distort public opinion and is active in relation to that across the world and that Ireland is not immune from that,” he said, reports Breaking News.

“We’ve also seen a very significant increase in that level of activity since the brutal invasion by Russia of Ukraine. Gardaí and our security services take all of these issues extremely seriously and monitor these issues seriously, and work with international counterparts on all these matters, and I have great confidence in the ability of gardaí, working with international counterparts,” reports Breaking News.
