Ryan delighted: A fifth of Irish motorists are planning to get rid of their car because it’s too expensive to run, survey finds

According to recent data, one in five automobile owners want to sell their vehicle in the next several years, reports RTE.

The poll found that nearly two thirds of respondents cited the growing cost of automobile ownership as a major factor in their decision.

But more than 75% of them stated that their biggest obstacle to giving up wheels is still food shopping.

A bit more than one-third stated they commute to and from work every day in their automobile, reports RTE.

Of those who drive, 5% overall stated they would want to use their car less, while 70% stated they would be more inclined to give up driving if public transport was superior.

Amárach Research conducted the study on behalf of GoCar, a vehicle sharing firm, among 1,201 persons in Ireland who were a national representative sample, reports RTE.

Four out of ten respondents stated they would prefer to give up driving, and slightly more than a third stated they would like to lessen their carbon impact.

According to the survey, 21% of participants own two or more automobiles, and 28% of them are parents.

More than a third said they require an extra car for work-related reasons, and around half said they need it for family transportation, reports RTE.
