Ryanair named as one of Europe’s top 10 polluters

Budget airline Ryanair has been named as one of Europe’s worst carbon emitters, thus earning the dubious honor of becoming the first airline to enter such ranking.

Coal-powered plants usually hog all the spots in the list, but airlines are slowly becoming some of the worst polluters across the world due to loopholes in carbon emissions regulations.

The list, collated by Brussels-based research group Transport & Environment, finds that pollution from aircraft has risen by about two thirds since 2005, and it shows no signs of stopping.

Ryanair now takes the ninth spot in the list. The rest are taken by electricity-producing plants that use coal to generate energy.
