Saving lives: New organ donation laws will see everyone become an automatic donor from 2018 onwards

The Government have confirmed that the current organ donation laws will be changed from next year onwards.

Under new proposals by the Department of Health the current system were all those who wish to donate their organs upon their death must carry a signed organ donation card sign by the individual, will no longer exist as all those who die will be automatically made a donor unless they or their family declines to do so.

The new laws which will be implemented in early 2018 are being brought in to encourage more people to donate their organs after their death in order to save more lives.

However the individual and their family do have the right to decline a said person from becoming an organ donor if they wish to do so by formally declaring they don’t want the deceased persons organs donated.

Speaking about the changes the Minister for Health Simon Harris said the new laws will hopefully speed up the organ donation transplant process which will in turn save more lives.
