School closures: Department of Education give schools permission to close as long as it is in the interest of child safety

Heavy snowfalls last night see schools making individual calls on whether they’re opening today.

The Department of Education has not officially closed public schools, but a spokesperson for the Department has warned that closures today due to adverse weather conditions.

The Department of Education say management at schools across the country have been given permission to close as long as it is in the interest of child safety.

They also say any decision will be made at the discretion of the school with parents advised to check locally with their school to see if they’re open.

The decision comes as Met Eireann extended its yellow status snow and ice warning until Sunday.
