Schools given permission to close for the day following hand sanitizer recall

Schools across the country are being advised to check their hand sanitizer after a product was recalled last night.

It is understood that the Department Agriculture, Food and the Marine, has issued the notice after they decided to remov the ‘Virapro Hand Sanitiser (PCS 100409)’ from the Biocidal Product Register.

The recall comes as the hand sanitizer is believed to cause health concerns as it contains methanol rather than ethanol.

The Department say the recalled product which has also been recalled from other public settings can cause symptoms such as dermatitis, eye irritation, upper respiratory irritation and headaches.

Meanwhile the Department of Education has advised schools to check their hand sanitizer products to see if they are using Viapro.

The Department of Education has advised schools to change their stocks of they are able to do so, however if a school is unable to replace their products they have permission to close their school today in order to change their supplies.
