An online petition calling on the EU to act on barbaric whaling in the Faroe Islands, has surpassed 260,000 signatures.

The petition which has been set up by the Blue Planet Society, has called on the European Union to intervene after 250 whales and dolphins were brutally slaughtered near the city ofTorshavn.

According to The Daily Mail, the pod of whales were brutally killed after fishing vessels drove them towards the shore on Thursday.

It is believed that the sea was turned red when locals slaughtered the whales with spears before leaving them for dead on the shoreline.

Although the Faroese Government have maintained the practice is legal, animal rights groups have labelled the killings as unnecessary, brutal and cruel.

The slaughter which has long been a tradition of the Faroese people also saw as many as white-sided dolphins brutally killed in the attack.

The Blue Planet Society say that the EU must act as the Faroe Islands is a colony of the kingdom of Denmark which is a leading European country.

However despite calls to end the practice, Faroese officials say the cull of whales provides sustainability as the meat and blubber obtained from the whales makes the 18 islands self sufficient especially given the lack farming.
