Search continues for fisherman missing off Sligo coast

A coordinated search involving multiple agencies is underway for a fisherman reported missing near Mullaghmore, Co Sligo, reports RTE.

The Malin Head coordination centre was alerted yesterday evening by a member of the public who reported a fishing boat stranded approximately 4km south of Mullaghmore Head.

Authorities suspect the fisherman may have gone overboard, as the boat was found with its engine still operational, reports RTE.

The Malin Head Coast Guard is leading the operation, focusing search efforts in the waters off Mullaghmore and extending into Donegal Bay.

Gardaí are working alongside the Coast Guard to support the ongoing search, reports RTE.

A wide-ranging response includes the Sligo-based Coast Guard helicopter R118, the Dublin-based R116 helicopter, the Killybegs Coast Guard Unit, and RNLI lifeboats from Bundoran, Árainn Mhór, An Baile Glas, and Sligo. Local boats and a merchant vessel are also assisting.

An RNLI spokesperson said Sligo Bay and Bundoran RNLI’s inshore lifeboats were requested by the Coast Guard to divert from a routine training exercise shortly before 8pm, reports RTE.

They said the request followed the report from a member of the public who raised the alarm after spotting a boat aground with its engine still running off Cliffoney Beach, reports RTE.
