Thousands of homes were left without power overnight and this morning as strong winds and rain swept across the country.
The heavy rain has also led to serious flooding in parts of Donegal, Sligo, Kerry, Mayo and many other counties and motorists are being urged to drive with care until the flooding subsides.
The Ballymacool to New Mills road near Letterkenny is currently impassable, while many other country roads and also flooded.
Gardaí are urging drivers to take caution today while the bad weather persists and to drive with care.
