#1 Ebola crisis: Health worker who cared for Thomas Eric Duncan, the Liberian man who brought the deadly virus to the US, has tested positive for the disease.

According to medical authorities, the worker was wearing appropriate protective gear while caring for Duncan, so it is unclear at this point how the contagion occurred.

This is the first case of Ebola transmission on US soil.

#2 Islamic State: Fierce fighting still rages in and around the Syrian border town of Kobani.

Local Kurdish fighters appear to be ill-equipped to hold out much longer against IS forces. Should Kobani fall, the jihadist organization will have open access into Turkey.

Elsewhere, IS have encircled Haditha, the largest town in the Anbar province. If they seize Haditha, the gates of Baghdad will be wide open.

#3 Pistorius: Oscar Pistorius due to be sentenced this week for manslaughter.

The athlete will hear his fate this week. He was cleared of the murder charge but was convicted on the charge of the manslaughter of his then girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

#4 Cyclone: Cyclone Hudhud makes landfall in India.

Six fatalities have been reported so far, after the storm made landfall on India’s eastern coast.

More than 200,000 people were evacuated from the area the day before, in an effort to minimize casualties.

#5 Rapist: Notorious rapist free to walk the streets again.

37-year-old Trevor Byrne has completed a 6 year long sentence for assaulting a woman in the Phisboro area of Dublin back in 2009.

Byrne has amassed ten convictions so far, the longest is a 15 year sentence for raping an 18-year-old woman back in 1993, when he was only 16 years of age.

#6 Focus Ireland: The organization has received nearly 3,600 requests for advice in the first 8 months of the year. This compares to 2,500 such requests in the same period last year.

People at risk of losing their home have sought the help of Focus Ireland, and the organization have highlighted the need to expand their services to deal with the increased demand.

#7 Wicklow fall: Rescue services activated after a man in his 20s fell near Bray head in Co. Wicklow.

The man sustained head and back injuries and was airlifted to Beaumont hospital.
