Even Minister for Health Leo Varadkar is said to be in a state of ’embarrassment and shame’ after a 73-year-old man died while on a trolley, under a TV blaring a rugby match, while clapping and cheering was going on around him.
The incident happened at the A&E in University Hospital Limerick, a well known black spot for overcrowding.
Eddie Moloney, 73, suffered a brain hemorraghe and was admitted to hospital on October 8 last year, but there was no room available for him. He subsequently spent 12 hours on a trolley before he passed away in a completely undignified manner, with people shouting and screaming at a TV screen above him.
His family highlighted their relative’s shameful last few hours on an RTE program last night.
Minister for Health Leo Varadkar, who was a guest on the programme, said: “I’m embarrassed and ashamed anyone nearing their end of life (should go through that).”
