Shameful: January sees new record homelessness with 13,531 Irish people in emergency accommodation

The number of individuals in Ireland seeking emergency housing reached a record high in January, reports RTE.

In January, 13,531 individuals were residing in emergency housing.

9,504 of them were adults, while 4,027 were children.

Compared to December 2023 data, when 13,318 persons were in emergency housing, this is an increase.

That was a 1.5% drop in the total from November, or 196 fewer persons, reports RTE.

It is common to observe a decrease in the number of homeless people in December, though, since many of them receive temporary housing from friends or family during the holiday season.

The Simon Communities of Ireland have voiced their shock that, despite the passage of more than ten years and a growing number of homeless people, not enough has been done to address the issue, reports RTE.
