Ireland has won its first Olympic swimming medal for Ireland since Michelle Smith won in 1996. Mona McSharry came third in the women’s 100m breaststroke final.
The Sligo woman was crying in the pool after an incredible performance. There’s huge excitement in Mona’s hometown in Sligo.
McSharry came in with a time of 1:05.59, pipping the Italian Benedetta Pilato who looked like making it onto the podium.
Mona also walked away from the sport in 2022 but is now a Bronze Olympic winner.
