Sheena Stewart, a 33 year old mother of 3 was fatally injured at 2:30 am on New Years day. The tragic accident occurred in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal as revellers were celebrating the start of a new year. Ms Stewart had been celebrating the new year in the neighbouring town of Bundoran but had made the 7km journey to Ballyshannon in hopes of getting a bus back to Letterkenny .
On Ballyshannon main street the victim fell into the road and was struck by a Taxi minibus whose driver though uninjured is said to be distraught , the driver and paramedics attempted emergency first aid and CPR on the victim who sadly died at the scene of the accident. Her body was then removed and taken to the nearby Shiel’s Hospital in Ballyshannon.
Ms Stewart lived in Letterkenny, Co Donegal but was originally from Ballybofey, Co Donegal and worked for a charity in Letterkenny that gives assistance to disadvantaged and vulnerable families .
In the last three years this is the second occasion on which the first road fatality of the New Year has occurred in Donegal.
