Tourists were left shocked as dozens of African migrants jumped off a boat in front of their eyes and scattered on the Cadiz beach in the south of Spain.
It’s understood that the group crossed the Strait of Gibraltar from Northern Africa on Wednesday afternoon.
Families with young children were on the beach at the time and scenes of panic were said to have taken place with people not knowing what was going on and running back to their hotels as police arrived.
Spanish officials couldn’t immediately be reached after office hours and thus police didn’t arrive in time to apprehend the migrants who were described as “mostly young strong looking men”.
The incident comes as the International Organization for Migration warned on Thursday that Spain will overtake Greece this year in the number of migrants arriving by sea, using boats and even jet-skis to get ashore.
