Similar to TV licence, councils may soon carry out ‘spot checks’ to see if people are recycling properly

The environmental protection authority said local governments should conduct random inspections of household waste bins and prosecute those who do not separate waste properly, reports Breaking News.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said that while 520 local government workers across the country conducted 197,000 environmental inspections last year, “in many areas it is not delivering the necessary environmental outcomes,” reports Breaking News.

According to the EPA, poor waste segregation remains an ongoing problem because households and businesses put most of their waste in the wrong containers.

“Local authorities need to enforce the roll-out and use of three-bin systems, to improve segregation and increase recycling of both household and commercial waste,” it said, reports Breaking News.

Recent statistics show that more than two-thirds of waste found in regular household and commercial bins should be placed in recyclable and organic waste bins.

The EPA has confirmed that it wants local authorities to increase inspections of homes and businesses to ensure that waste is properly separated, for example using spot checks or collecting evidence.

EPA states that targeted inspections should be conducted in areas where data show low levels of compliance, reports Breaking News.
