Simon Harris claims there won’t be garda checkpoints at border

According to Taoiseach Simon Harris, there won’t be any gardai stationed at the border to stop asylum seekers from entering the Republic of Ireland from Northern Ireland, reports RTE.

Speaking after British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak insisted that the Irish Government “must uphold its promises” in order to prevent a hard border, he demanded “clarification” on the matter.

Mr. Sunak said that there is no legal requirement for the UK to accept the repatriation of undocumented immigrants from Ireland.

The government said yesterday that emergency legislation to declare the UK a safe nation and permit Ireland to send back asylum applicants will be drafted, reports RTE.

Additionally, it said that 100 gardaĆ would be available for front-line immigration enforcement work, but it made it clear that they would not be “deployed to physically monitor the border with Northern Ireland.”

Mr. Harris said that Ireland will honour its commitment to the United Kingdom under the Common Travel Area, referring to it as “standard operating procedure”.

Earlier, Mr Sunak told the House of Commons: “Now, it’s no surprise that our robust approach to illegal migration is providing a deterrent but the answer is not sending police to villages in Donegal. It’s to work with us in partnership to strengthen our external borders all around the Common Travel Area that we share,” reports RTE.
