He’ll never call a girl a boy: Enoch Burke rejects defence argument that he has damaged his own reputation

Instructor Enoch Burke has refuted charges that he was defamed in a newspaper story, saying that his actions were what hurt his reputation, reports RTE.

On the second day of a defamation lawsuit brought against Mediahuis, the Sunday Independent’s publishers, over a story published in October 2022, Mr. Burke was subjected to cross-examination.

The article, which the court has heard, stated that Mr. Burke’s religious views were bothering other prisoners at Mountjoy Prison, so they had to shift him to a different cell, reports RTE.

Mr. Burke disagreed with Senior Defence Counsel Ronan Lupton’s assertion that he had established a long-standing reputation for himself and that his actions had already harmed it.

Furthermore, he disapproved with the idea that calling someone unpleasant is only a matter of opinion and won’t harm someone’s reputation.

According to Mr. Lupton, Mr. Burke’s public scandal stemmed “from the way you behave.” You misbehave in court and you violate court rulings,” reports RTE.

Mr. Burke was already informed that the Wilson’s Hospital School Student Council had issued a letter expressing dissatisfaction with his continued attendance at the school following his suspension.

The letter was significant, according to Mr. Lupton, as it voiced concerns about how his presence was affecting their schooling, reports RTE.
