Simon Harris to engage with government regarding payment of non repayable, University education and living expenses grants to Non Irish/Non EU migrants

The Migrant and Refugee Rights Centre (NASC) has launched a new campaign to get Irish taxpayers to pay for University education for some types Non Irish/Non EU migrants living in Ireland.

RTE are fully being the NASC campaign. On their website they highlight a number of migrant stories.

“Brendan Nkwenzum has a Stamp 3 permission for Ireland…His Dad is ill, and his mother had to stop working to look after him, so Brendan had to drop out of his IT course at Cork Institute of Technology because his fees were so expensive”.

“Riches Uwoghiren has just completed her Leaving Cert…A SUSI grant would help her achieve her dream of an education to become a Social Worker in the future”.

“Gift Okoro who has an exceptional Stamp 4, has completed a degree in Social Care at the Munster Technological University…She wants to do a master’s in social work and is considering doing a course part time so she can work to pay for her education.”

“Memunat Elegushi applied but did not qualify for a SUSI grant to do hospitality in Cork Institute of Technology”.

“Qiqa Maqubela says unless migrants and refugees work, it is impossible for them to access third level education”.

NASC is looking to fund these and hundreds of other non EU migrants via the tax payer funded agency, Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI)

Non repayable Student Grants include;
• Maintenance Grant – a contribution towards living expenses (variable rates up to €5,915 maximum)
• Student Contribution Charge of €3,000 where the Free Fees Schemes apply to the course and the student is eligible for free fees under those schemes, OR
• Tuition Fees to a maximum limit of either
◦ €6,270 where the Free Fees Schemes do not cover the course, or
◦ The full amount of 100% of the EU rate of fee for the course where the Free Fees Schemes apply to the course
